Homework

The children enjoyed their first week of homework.  Each day, Mrs. Niles goes over the homework with the children at closing meeting.  The next day, we talk about the previous night's homework together.  This past week, after completing the homework involving counting mirrors and mugs in the house (for the letter Mm), we made a chart to show the results.  Each child read the answers from their homework papers and recorded their results on our big chart paper.  Mrs. Niles then asked them whether the numbers they wrote showed more mugs or mirrors in their house.  All but one child had more mugs in their house than mirrors.
Mrs. Niles reminded us to make sure to complete only ONE homework assignment each night.  This will help them to get into the routine of completing homework on a daily basis.  Make sure to also fill in the reading log with the title of one book you and your child read together (10-15 minutes a day of daily reading is suggested for homework).  Children who complete these logs will get stickers on them at the end of the week.  Below are some questions you might want to ask your child while you are reading with them.
  •   What do you think will happen next?
  •   How do you think the character feels? Why?
  •  Can you find any word wall words on this page?  (if you see one of the words we have learned already)
  • What do you notice in the pictures?
  • At the end you can ask whether they liked the story and why?
  • At the end you can ask what the story was about (have them retell you it and include details from different parts of the story).
One more suggestion to do while reading to them is to use your reading finger to show them how to track the print (from left to right and from top to bottom).

Thanks for helping your child to have a positive homework experience!
