For the past few weeks, we have been learning about Families in our class. The children have been listening to stories about families, discussing how families can be similar and different, and writing a book about their own families. During math time, they have also been answering questions about families and making graphs to show the results. One of the weekly math activities we do in our class is called "Today's Question." Upon arriving into our classroom on some days, the children will find a question posted near the classroom entrance. They need to look at the question and move their nametag to show their answer. So far we have only worked on yes/no questions. Later on, we will work on questions that have two or three choices. The children have answered "Today's Question" about whether they have a sister and whether they have a brother. During math time, we discuss the results. The children are learning to talk about which group has more or less, and whether groups are equal or not. They are asked which number is bigger/smaller and what the total is when the two groups are added together. There are a lot of teaching points when doing "Today's Question." We also made a class graph of how many people are in each child's family (see top).
