Al's Place

Al's Pals is the social curriculum we use at the Capuano School.  Twice a week Mrs. Niles does a lesson from this program.  Once a week, the squirrel class (our neighbor's next door) join us for Al's Pals.  Al and his friends, Ty and Keisha, have been teaching us about feelings and ways to manage our feelings.  We have been learning different songs to help us, including a "calm down" song and song to remind us to "Stop and Think" when a problem arises.  We have a special place in our classroom, called "Al's Place," where we can go to when we are experiencing a strong feeling, such as sadness, anger or frustration.  Many children in our class use this place to help calm themselves down and to feel better.  In Al's Place you will find a picture of Al, Keisha, and Ty.  There is also a poster to remind us what to do when a problem arises.  There is a teddy bear to hug and talk to if we want.  A mirror also helps us to see what our body looks like when we are having these feelings and helps us to see it change when we calm down.  I like having a place in our classroom to go to when I get upset.  Al also recommended that your children have a special place in your own house where they can go to when they need a place to calm down.
