Rick Charette is at the Capuano! For those of you who may not know about him, he is a children's singer and songwriter that travels around New England performing shows and recording songs with students. Yesterday our class, along with another kindergarten class, met with Rick and his friend Roy to write and record a song. This song will be compiled with all of the other preschool and kindergarten classes' songs on a CD. Each child at the Capuano will get a copy of this CD sometime in June to keep.
Before meeting with Rick and Roy, our class and Mrs. Romano's class met together to brainstorm ideas about what to create a song about. We generated a very long list of possible topics. We voted on which to choose and it was decided that our song would be about cookies. The next step was for us to brainstorm further about our topic. The children came up with lots of ideas about cookies, including the different kinds, how they make you feel when you eat it, how to make them, and some describing words about them. They came up with 2 big pieces of paper worth of ideas. We brought these ideas with us to our session with Rick and Roy. He used their ideas, helped them write the lines, set it to music, and practiced it over and over with them. Lastly, he recorded them singing it for the CD. We are still practicing it in our class so your child will be able to sing it when the CD comes out. We also added it to our poetry and songbooks so they could take it home and share it with their families. See if they can sing it for you when bringing these books home.
A special thanks to the PTA for funding this activity. Rick Charette will be performing a concert where he sings some of the songs he wrote some time in May for all of the classes to attend. Many of the kids remember him coming to our school last year when they were in preschool and are excited about his return.
Here is our song, Cookies!
