In Mrs. Niles' class, there are many activities she does with her students that work on developing oral language. One of these activities is the vocabulary box. This activity involves everyone sitting in a circle and passing the box around. When it is your turn, you pull a card and read the question on the card (with a teacher's help). Then you get a turn to respond to the question. Other kids can also answer the same question before the box is passed on. Kids are asked to answer questions in complete sentences. They may need to use more than one sentence to explain their response. Oral language activities, such as this one, help build vocabulary and develop skills needed for both reading and writing. This is a fun activity that the kids really enjoy participating in.Here are some examples of questions inside the box.
