We are finishing up a unit on the Neighborhood and Community Helpers. At the start of this unit, the children brainstormed the different people/places/things you would find in the neighborhood. We made a web chart of all of our ideas on big paper. Throughout the unit, we read books about the neighborhood and community helpers to learn more them. Above is a mural we made of many of the places and people you find in the neighborhood. Over the course of several days, each child needed to draw places and people to add to it. They labeled their pictures with words (by trying to "sound out" the words they wished to spell). We even added street signs, roads, trees, and pets to our mural. This mural is currently on display outside our classroom.
During this unit, each child also worked on making a house (which began during our Hh week). They used recycled items, like boxes and paper towel rolls, to create their houses. After constructing them, they painted them, added details (like windows, doors, driveways, grass, and fences) and even added people. Some opted to make cars using model magic clay. Here are some pictures of the finished products. They had a lot of fun with this project and did a great job!
